Frequently asked questions
Answers to help you feel prepared and at ease.
Fees
Do you take my insurance?
Dr. Guerra is out of network with insurance plans. Many PPO plans can reimburse part of an out-of-network visit, and we can give you what you need to ask your plan. We do not bill Medicare or Medi-Cal.
What is a superbill, and how do I use it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt you can send to your plan. It carries a diagnosis code that your plan will see. Your plan decides whether it pays you back, and reimbursement is not guaranteed.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start, and we give you one in writing. If a bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How do fees work?
Your fee is given to you in writing before you book, and it is the same for every session. Our fees page explains insurance, self-pay, receipts and estimates.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes, a health savings or flexible spending card can be used to pay for sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session. A late cancellation or a missed session is charged the full fee, and we can talk through exceptions.
Your sessions
What happens in a first session?
We talk about what you want from therapy, and Dr. Guerra explains how she works, what stays private and what does not. No hard memory is processed in the first session.
Will I have to describe everything?
No. In EMDR you hold a memory in mind in small steps and you decide how much to say aloud. We prepare first, and you can pause or stop at any time.
How often and for how long will we meet?
Sessions are 50 minutes for individuals and 80 minutes for couples. How often you come, and for how long, is set together and reviewed as we go.
Is Dr. Guerra licensed where I live?
She is a psychologist licensed in California. She sees clients in person in San Francisco, and by video when you are in California at the time of the session.
Safety and privacy
What should I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, at any time. In an emergency, call 911. This practice does not monitor messages around the clock.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you say is kept private. The law sets a few limits, such as a risk of serious harm to you or to someone else, and Dr. Guerra explains them in your first session, before you share anything.
