EMDR and somatic therapy

Gentle, steady work with what you carry

EMDR and somatic therapy for adults, with a licensed psychologist in San Francisco or by video. We get ready before any hard memory is touched, and you can slow down or stop at any point.

Our philosophy

Therapy as a gentle unraveling

We believe healing isn't about fixing what's broken — it's about illuminating what's already whole within you. Like gossamer threads catching light, your inner wisdom becomes visible when held with care and patience.

  • Presence over performance

We don't ask you to perform wellness. We meet you exactly where you are.

  • Safety as foundation

Real change requires real safety. We build that container together, slowly.

  • Embodied compassion

Healing lives in the body as much as the mind. We honor both.

You might be feeling…

These experiences are common, and they don't have to define your story.

  • A persistent heaviness that no amount of rest seems to lift

  • Relationships that leave you feeling unseen or misunderstood

  • Anxiety that shows up in your body before your mind catches up

  • A sense of disconnection from the life you thought you'd be living

  • Grief that doesn't follow a timeline or make sense to others

  • The exhaustion of performing 'fine' when you're anything but

In their words

“The room was quiet and nobody hurried me. I always knew what we were going to do before we did it.”

Krista R.

“She explained each step before we started and stopped whenever I asked. I felt in charge of the pace.”

Edgar M.

“She listens closely and doesn't fill the silence. I never felt like a case file.”

The EMDR phases

The eight phases of EMDR, in plain words

EMDR follows eight phases. EMDRIA, the EMDR International Association, approves the trainings that teach them, and Dr. Guerra's basic training was through one of those programs. You can ask about any phase, and you can stop at any point.

  • 01

    We talk first

Dr. Guerra asks about your history and what you want from therapy. You choose how much to say.

  • 02

    We get ready

You learn how EMDR works and practice ways to settle yourself, so you have steady ground before any hard memory comes up.

  • 03

    We pick a starting point

Together we choose one memory to begin with and notice what you feel and believe about it.

  • 04

    We process

You follow back-and-forth eye movements, taps or tones and notice what comes up. Dr. Guerra checks in often, and you can pause.

  • 05

    We strengthen what is new

We work on a belief you would rather hold about yourself, until it feels more true.

  • 06

We check in with your body

You scan for tension that remains, and we give it attention.

  • 07

    We close each session

Every session ends with time to settle, so you leave steady, with calming exercises to use between visits.

  • 08

    We look back

Next time we see how your week went and what has changed, and decide together where to go.

“The pacing was right. We never went further than I was ready for.”

Common questions

What happens in a first session?

We talk about what you want from therapy, and Dr. Guerra explains how she works, what stays private and what does not. No hard memory is processed in the first session.

What is EMDR?

A structured therapy in eight phases. You recall a memory in small steps while following eye movements, taps or tones. You stay awake and in control, and you can stop at any time.

How long will we work together?

Your clinician sets the pace with you, and we check in regularly. Some people come for a short stretch and others for much longer.

Do you offer video sessions?

Yes, for clients who are in California when we meet, because that is where Dr. Guerra is licensed. In-person sessions are at our San Francisco office.

How do fees work?

Your fee is given to you in writing before you start. How insurance, receipts for reimbursement and estimates work is on our fees page.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Dr. Guerra is a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. If medication might help, she can refer you to a prescriber.
